Voice

One of my clients told me that just hearing my voice made her feel calmer. My initial response: bursting out laughing. Honestly, in my entire life no one has ever referred to my voice as "calm". More polite people might call it something like "assertive". My husband, when asked, after a thoughtful pause said "a bit pushy". (I love him anyway.)

But what this is really about is what we call the "therapeutic relationship" or "therapeutic alliance". It is the relationship between healing professional and client that is characterized by mutual trust and the empathy, lack of judgement and genuine wish to help that the practitioner brings to the table. It is the bedrock of any healing approach. When it is strong, the client feels safe to be vulnerable and can move forward on the healing journey. Many studies show that the strength of the therapeutic relationship is a far more important predictor of a successful outcome than, e.g., the healing modality. Or, in this case, my tone of voice.

Comments by clients like this one tell me, the practitioner, that we are on the right track and will likely do good work together. And that's what matters.
